News/Events
I think the national motto for this month is, "Stay Cool." I've also heard, "Beat the Heat."
I
just thought that was so sweet. My dad rarely ever writes me emails and it's so
weird when I get one from him.

For Authors
Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 26th at Shanahan’s (formerly the Corner Clubhouse). It is located in a strip in the SE Corner of 75th and Woodward Avenue in Woodridge. Networking time begins at 6:45 (pm) and the regular meeting will begin at 7 (pm).

When it comes to writing with brevity, emotional appeal, and using ultra-specific words, songwriters have all of us beat. You see, when a songwriter sits down to write a song, they have to immediately hook the listener, they have to keep them entertained, then drive home their message - all in the space of about three minutes. Sound kinda familiar? To Read More Click Here

I have 281 Pages, which consists of 26 Chapters and Epilogue for a 6x9 paperback. FALLING ROSES: THE YEARS BETWEEN is complete. On the Unhome (Extras) Page, see link above, there are a few sneak previews. See July News/Events section for a blurb about THE YEARS BETWEEN. In the sequel to FALLING ROSES (AuthorHouse, 2005), FALLING ROSES: THE YEARS BETWEEN will let you discover more romance, suspense, drama, a secret baby, and a few love triangles all wrapped into one.
I want to say a huge thank you again to Autumn Conley Bittick my Editor. She has been absolutely wonderful!!
THE YEARS BETWEEN begins where FALLING ROSES left off and before the Epilogue begins. What happened to Gabrielle at the end of Chapter 52?
And
another big thank you goes out to Irene www.irenesimages.com
for doing an absolutely wonderful job on the front cover!! (Which I'll save for
a surprise.) Also, amazingly, which was a huge surprise for me, Irene has
created (Completely different from the cover!) a Falling Roses Screensaver,
Desktop Wallpaper, Themes, Cursors & Icons. Follow the links below to
download. Absolutely extraordinary. Thank you Irene!!

Demystifying Writers’ Demons©
One by One by Joan Upton Hall

Don’t be too spacey after end marks
• Old-style
typing rule: Two spaces were required after colons, semicolons, and end
marks (periods, question marks, and exclamation marks). Those of us who
learned typing “in the olden days” need to get with the times.
•
Modern usage:
Most editors today prefer one space, partly to save space and also for
scanning purposes and the computer problems this can cause in wrapping at the
end of lines. Learning to break the habit can drive us old dogs nuts.
•
An easy way to correct this in manuscripts: On your computer tool bar, go
down to “Replace.” In the “Find” box, hit your space bar twice. In the
“Replace” box, hit your space bar once. Then click the box for “Replace
all,” and you’ll be spacey no longer.
Do demons bedevil your writing? Similar, confusing words? Grammar, punctuation, or capitalization rules? “The Demystifier” will clear up the mystery (primary reference unless otherwise noted: Garner, Bryan A. Dictionary of Modern American Usage. N.Y.: Oxford University Press). Address questions and comments to freelance editor, Joan Upton Hall, PO Box 179, Hutto, TX 78634, or email: jmuHall@aol.com. More problems like the one above are demystified in the booklet, 50 Writers’ Tips. Find a few of them at “books, etc.” on website: www.JoanUptonHall.com.

The Page that Went Kaput!
I guess that would be my fault. I forgot all about the Testimonial Page. One day it was on the Home Page and then there was just no room for it and it went MIA. I've updated it with comments that I've received the past few months and I'd like to share those with you. I'll try to remember to add more testimonials and if you have one to add, please email me. Please click here to read the page that went Kaput. I will also put a link for the Testimonial Page on the Extra Page.
